When you train as hard as you do, you must also care for your body as hard as you work it! Epsom salt baths can provide some great benefits for any athlete. Because epsom salt helps replenish your body’s magnesium levels and sulfates, it …

— helps improve muscle and nerve function

— reduces inflammation and eases muscle cramps

— improves blood flow and oxygenation throughout the body

— allows your body to absorb sulfates which are necessary building blocks for healthy joints, skin and nervous tissue

— helps flush toxins from your body

— helps build key protein molecules in your brain tissue and joints

— helps improve absorption of nutrients

Even better?

Add 6-10 drops of high quality essential oils to your detox bath for even more high level performance benefits! My favorite essential oils to add to epsom salt detox baths include…

LAVENDER: promote relaxation, ease stress, support healthy pH balance

LEMONGRASS: revitalizes the body and mind, muscle and skin toner, help relieve muscle, tendon, joint aches associated with sports, exercise, and training

PEPPERMINT: energizing, invigorating, eases physical discomfort associated with sports, exercise, training, and soothes tired feet

How to take a detox bath…

1c epsom salt
1c baking soda

mix 6-10 drops of essential oil into your salt/baking soda if applicable

add mix while drawing hot bath water in your tub

soak for 30-40 minutes

Best of all, epsom salt baths are very inexpensive! A great low cost way to take better care of your body. Both epsom salt and baking soda can be found at your nearest Walmart or local drugstore.

Even 10 drops of high quality, therapeutic grade essential oils won’t break the bank. The essential oils mentioned above would only cost $0.40-$0.80 to add to your bath when you buy them at wholesale! When you can do an epsom salt detox bath with essential oils for under $2, it’s well worth the benefit! Give it a try 🙂

*Note: these detox baths are super awesome for parents and coaches too! You don’t have to let your player(s) have all the fun.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON QUALITY
When you use essential oils in an epsom salt bath, they will absorb into your body. Do NOT use oils that are produced primarily for fragrance or scent. Those products may not undergo the necessary processes for retaining optimal safety and benefit.

As Organic Consumers points out…

“Quality is of the essence here. First of all, what we’re talking about here is pure, therapeutic grade essential oils from plants, NOT synthetic fragrance oils or perfumes, which can be toxic and typically contain allergenic compounds.

But even among essential oils, the quality can vary widely and assessing the quality of any given brand can be difficult, as factors such as growing conditions and methods of harvesting, distillation, manufacture, and storage can all affect the final product.

The University of Minnesota1 offers some helpful guidance regarding international standard-setting agencies and considerations to take into account when looking for an essential oil.

One of the most important considerations is to look for a statement of purity. What you’re looking for is 100% essential oil (meaning it has not been diluted, altered, or mixed with anything else). Price can be a tipoff. If it’s really cheap, it’s probably a reflection of poor quality.”
