NPF Champions Clinic in Hawaii – January 2012

NPF Champion Chicago Bandits Coach Darrick Brown and All-Star Megan Wiggins will be in Hawaii the last weekend of January to work with local players and coaches at a 2-day clinic! Coach Brown and Megan will cover hitting, defense, and pitching on Saturday and Sunday, January 28th and 29th. Hope to see you there!

Chicago Bandits Coming to Hawaii: Coach Darrick Brown and Megan Wiggins

A Hawaii clinic with Coach Darrick Brown of the NPF Champions the Chicago Bandits along with NPF All-Star outfielder Megan Wiggins is in the works. We are currently working out details and working on a flyer, but we’re shooting for the last weekend in January 2012.

Coach Darrick and Megan will go over both offense and defense. Plus a 1-hour pitching session will also be available to pitchers after the regular session both on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to learning from the best in Pro Fastpitch!

Blessed by Softball Opportunities and Thoughts From Hawaii

In the spirit of giving thanks in this Thanksgiving month, it’s days like this when I am so thankful for what I do. I may not directly make a lot of money from it, but it’s always so rewarding. Because of what I do and share with you, I have the opportunity to talk with, and sometimes even meet, some really great people in the softball community around the country. While I by no means know everyone there is to know or rub elbows with all of who’s who in softball, I do have the honor of getting to know people I may not know otherwise.

I’m also blessed with the opportunity to bring some of these great softball people here to Hawaii. While living in Hawaii is awesome, it’s also quite expensive for us to travel to the mainland US to attend camps, clinics, or coaching conventions. Any time we can bring someone here to share great resources with more people and with coaches, players or parents who many never get the opportunity to travel and learn, it’s a great thing!

There may not be huge rewards now, but the simple act and experience of being a part of something that helps others is awesome in and of itself. Other opportunities or rewards that come in the future as an indirect or direct result, are just gravy.

I remember back when my oldest daughter was 8, I wanted to make camps and clinics here in Hawaii a more regular event. I wanted to bring clinicians, coaches, and instructors to Hawaii at least on an annual basis so that we could all learn and better the game here. It’s interesting to see how, while I haven’t really consciously gone after it, we’re slowly but surely getting to that point. I hadn’t even realized until now that it has been 7 years since that original thought. It doesn’t even seem that long. I believe the journey will continue and these efforts will eventually grow into something bigger. I’m not exactly sure how, I’m not exactly sure when, but I’m perfectly fine taking it slow and letting the people of Hawaii pull it along rather that push it at them before they’re ready.

I’ve seen too many people go to the mainland for an event, see what’s going on up there and go, “They do this in the mainland, let’s do it here” or “it works in the mainland, let’s do it here.” While it’s a good concept how you carry it out has to fit Hawaii, not the mainland. We’ll get there one day. We’re always a bit behind. Always on Hawaiian time, but that’s okay. The tortoise wins the race!

It’s always amazing when we find instructors and coaches who are in it for the love of the game. They make it work. They make it possible. Making a trip to Hawaii doesn’t work for everyone. I don’t work with and bring down everyone who contacts me with interest in coming here. It takes a special kind of person to ultimately make it work for the good of the softball community here first and anything or anyone else, second.

It’s fun that I’m getting to meet more and more of those people.

Countdown to Hawaii Bustos Bash

The countdown to the Hawaii Bustos Bash is ON! Less than 24 hours to the coaches clinic and I’m looking forward to it. I’m happy to see even more coaches and players signing up even as we get down to the wire! Everything I’ve heard from everyone who’s been around Crystl and Howard has been very, very positive. I think everyone involved will have a great time and learn something new.

PLUS, I just picked up 4 Brand New DeMarini Bustos Bats courtesy of SportStan to be included in prizes for the clinic raffle (nice and shiny and still in the wrapper!).

Softball Hitting Video Clip – 10U

This video clip shows a 10U softball hit/swing. Solid hit, shows firm front side, but no follow through and hands look like they are at or below the bat head on contact. Includes slow motion replay for your enjoyment! This hit ended up being a line drive to the pitcher that was caught.

Softball Fielding Tip – Proper Footwork for the Slow Roller

This video will show you how to properly approach (use correct footwork) a slow roller in the outfield. Actually, this video also includes a few examples of incorrect footwork and tells you why it’s better to do it differently. Slow motion and freeze frames allow you to get a good look at how to properly approach a slow rolling ground ball in the outfield.

Unique Softball Hitting Video – 10U Swings

There’s really nothing instructional about these hitting clips, just a chance to take a look at some youth softball hitting swings in slow motion and from a couple different angles. This batter definitely has some things to work on, but what’s unique about these clips is that NONE of them include balls that were hit fair. lol

Usually when people put together hitting clips, they only use ones that show solid contact or good hits - not this one! Enjoy!

Fastpitch Softball Hitting Rule – Hit By Pitch

Some people think that softball hitters automatically get to go to first base when they get hit by a pitch. However, that isn’t always true. The batter must actually make an attempt to get out of the way of the pitch in order to be awarded the base. Of course, like many other calls in this game, this one depends on the umpires judgment so it’s not always a cut and dry call.

Below is a video clip that shows an example of a batter being hit by a pitch and not being awarded first base. So remember, when you’re in the box, you must make some sort of move that looks like an attempt to get out of the way of the pitch if you want to be awarded 1st base on a bean.

8U Softball Catching – Priceless

Yesterday I hooked up my video camera to my new Macbook for the first time. I had some softball clips I took yesterday that I wanted to get onto a DVD.

I also came across some other fun softball video clips from last year. This one is part of an 8U game. I love watching this age level because the girls just have so much FUN playing the game…even when things don’t go exactly right (as you will see in the clip).

Howard Kobata Clinic This Weekend

I’m looking forward to another opportunity to seeing a clinic put on my Howard Kobata. Every time I get a chance to see these clinics I learn something new, remember something I didn’t retain before, or just get a good refresher on the concepts and techniques that he shares. I would have loved to attend one of his clinics when I was a player because they are definitely a challenge and I loved a good challenge as a player.

For any coach or parent on the island of Oahu, you are more than welcome to check the clinic out. Howard will be at St. Francis high school at 2:00pm on Saturday.

I’ll report back after the weekend!
