We Don’t Need More Positive Sports Parents

We don’t need more positive coaches or positive sports parents. Why?

Because many who buy in to those ideas kind of have this feeling that not being mean is more or less the extent of what it entails …

  • not swearing at the kids
  • not yelling from the sidelines
  • not going ballistic over mistakes
  • not badmouthing others
  • etc, etc, etc

I know because that’s the way I used to feel. I was against the craziness of youth sports, but, at the same time, I was still coaching and parenting  with methods that are based in fear and coercion. I knew that human beings deserved to be respected and treated well, and yet, I still had no idea how much further that could go.

I have since realized that, in order to truly make a powerfully positive impact in the lives of others, you have to do so much more than just not be mean.

We don’t need more “positive” coaches and parents.

We need more transformational LEADERS (coaches, parents, and players alike) who are willing to BE the change they ignite in the world around them.

They constantly develop, nurture, and inspire excellence from within through …

  • Connection
  • Extending Respect
  • Extending Trust
  • Fostering Cooperation
  • Listening with the Intent of Understanding
  • Being Respectful
  • Being Worthy of Trust
  • Being Mindful
  • Inspiring (not demanding)
  • Always Learning
  • Having High Intention (not “expectation”) coupled with Low Attachment
  • Understanding how true learning and sustainable change comes about
  • and so on and so forth

These leaders don’t have to rely on “motivation” or “holding people accountable” or external rewards and punishments. They certainly don’t make the powerfully positive impact they’re making simply because they choose to be “positive” and to not be mean.

In fact, true transformational leaders don’t have to rely on any of those commonly employed tactics as their main method of leading or teaching because they get deep into the heart of the matter and inspire positive change from the inside out.

Honestly, it’s a lot EASIER to just yell and punish and push. This approach takes a LOT more effort, understanding, patience, and creativity, but transformational leaders know that this way of leading is well WORTH the effort and that WE, all of us who are part of this community (and beyond) together, are worth putting forth that effort for.

So I’m not here to encourage you to “be positive.” I’m here to tell you you can be SO much more than that!

Be relentless in your pursuit of excellence because GAMECHANGERS don’t just win games. They change LIVES.
