I’ve heard MANY softball coaches say that players do NOT need endurance to play this game. They need quickness and explosiveness. They say our game is a sprint, not a marathon.
Now I agree that our game is one of quickness and explosiveness. I also agree that long distance running or cardio probably isn’t the best training for softball.
While, softball players may not need “endurance” the same way marathon runners do, disregarding “endurance” altogether is a mistake.
As a player, you must be able to maintain and sustain as much of your explosiveness, power, and speed over the course of a game as possible.
That requires “endurance.”
Speed endurance, strength endurance, power endurance…one burst of each per game is not enough.
Have you ever seen a pitcher slow down significantly and start losing control over the course of a game?
It’s because she lacks endurance.
Or maybe a base runner who doesn’t have the same speed toward the end of a double header as they do fresh…endurance!
Still don’t think endurance is necessary in softball?
Have you ever tried to play 4+ softball games in one day?
Do you know what that feels like?
Then think about doing that for 3-4 days in a row for 4-5 weekends in a row.
Or try playing 50-60+ games over a matter of a few months and tell me if that feels anything like a sprint!
Now you do NOT have to go running laps upon laps around a track to gain softball endurance. There are more effective ways of doing it.
One of my favorite is HIIT or high intensity interval training. It’s quicker, more fun, and lets you work your softball explosiveness and strength while increasing the endurance you need.
