More than just an athlete

Every athlete is a HUMAN BEING first.
It’s important that we remember that.

It’s also important that they know that.
Who they are behind or beyond the jersey matters.
Understanding their own identity outside the game, or even outside of social media, matters now more than ever.

We see too many young athletes (or even recently “retired” athletes) lost amidst the noise and confusion of external validation. And many student-athletes, whether we intend for them to or not, become dependent on it as they go throughout their career. After all, they’re practically bombarded with external validation all throughout their childhood. Grades, scores, hits, stats, wins … all coming from sources outside themselves.

But there comes a time when all of that ends.
Or a time when things aren’t going great and none of those things are “impressive” enough for people to recognize, acknowledge, praise or reward them for. And where does that leave them?

Without a strong sense of self outside of all those external metrics and rewards, without a strong sense of self that comes from within, comes from understanding and knowing of who they are before and outside of all of that, it can be a very disorienting and challenging experience when those external pats on the back suddenly go away. When no one is “seeing” your daily efforts, your growth, your progress. When everything you do is treated as “normal” instead of being seen as “awesome.” And not everyone handles that radical change well. Not everyone finds their football quickly, even if they eventually do.

So how do we combat that?
How do we give them a solid foundation they can stand upon and build from no matter what?
